History of Tattoos of the Sailors

History of tattoos began over 5000 years ago. It was first originated found on walls not on human skins. The word tattoo itself derived from the Polynesian word “ta” which means striking something and Tahitian word “tatau” which means marking something. Tattoos began discovered on human skin in Egypt. In 1891, archaeologists discovered the Egyptian female mummy that was believed as a priestess of the goddess Hathor, who lived at Thebes between 2160 BC and 1994 BC. On the mummy body displayed several lines, dashes, dots and abstract geometric patterns tattoos. The Egyptians is believed as the first community who introduced the practice of tattooing to the world. While in Asia, the tattoo was firstly found in Southeast Asia at 2,000 BC.

History of tattoos of sailors is begun in the 1700 by Captain James Cook who discovered the tattooed natives of the South Pacific. Captain Cook found it after he arrived on Tahiti. Tattoo was the most exotic souvenir from his long journey on the ocean that he could bring home. Since then, the connections between sailors and tattoos has been unite tightly. Even though, not much can be told about how sailors tattoo originally started but the story of Captain Cook become one of many evidences of their history of tattoos.
